Biographical History

Stanton Peele was bron on January 8, 1946. He received a B.A. in political science from the University of Pennsylvania in 1967, a PhD. in social psychology from the University of Michigan in 1973, and a law degree from Rutgers University in 1997.

Dr. Peele is best known for rejecting the disease theory of alcoholism and offering alternatives to the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous. He argues that addictions are negative patterns of behavior that most people experience to some degree during their lives. He views addiction not as a medical problem but as a problem of life that most people overcome.

In 1975, his book, Love and Addiction was published.
