Biographical History

Joseph R. Anderson (1813-1892) was associated with the Tredegar Company, a major iron works and armorer in Richmond, Virginia. He was a Confederate brigadier general and friend of Robert E. Lee.

Native of Botetourt County, Virginia; graduate of West Point; associated with and owner of Tredegar Iron Works from 1841; served in the Confederate Army from 1861-1862, then was reassigned to keep the iron works in operation; active in civic and political affairs until his death.

Joseph Reid Anderson became owner of the Tredegar Iron Works in 1848. In September 1861 he entered the Confederate Army and was commissioned brigadier-general. He resigned his commission in July 1862, and returned to the Tredegar Iron Works, that had become the major arsenal of the Confederacy. Anderson again assumed control over the Tredegar Iron Works in 1867.
