Bush, Evelyn. "United States Land Offices in Alabama, 1803-1879." Alabama Historical Quarterly 17 (1955): 146-153.

The St. Stephens Land Office was created by an act of Congress on 1803 Mar. 3 to administer part of the Land District East of the Pearl River. The office opened in 1811 Sept. and was moved to Mobile in 1867. Though the boundaries administered by the office changed several times, the St. Stephens Land Office generally was responsible for land in the southwestern portion of the State of Ala.
