Biographical History

Seattle-based women's peace organization.

Seattle Women Act for Peace (SWAP), an affiliate of the national organization Women Strike for Peace, was formed around 1961 to protest the arms race and atmospheric nuclear testing conducted by the United States and the USSR. Activities of the group, which also lobbies for social justice, have included demonstrations in the 1960s against nuclear testing and antiballistic missile systems, celebrations in 1989 for the International Year of the Child, and protests in 1999 against the World Trade Organization meetings in Seattle. Seattle Women Act for Peace co-founder Anci Koppel was a lifelong activist who participated in regional and international peace movements from 1938 through her death in 2000.

From the description of Seattle Women Act for Peace records, 1936-2000 (bulk 1960-2000). (Unknown). WorldCat record id: 54782398
