William Holman Hunt was a British painter. In 1843, while attending lectures at the Royal Academy Schools, he met Sir John Everett Millais, who, together with Hunt and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, formed the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. They sought to revitalize art by emphasizing the detailed observation of the natural world in a spirit of quasi-religious devotion to truth. Although the Pre-Raphaelites broke up in 1852, Hunt remained loyal to that style until his death in 1910.
