Biographical History
Historical note: Fort Apache was established in May 1870 as a supply base to support field operations against hostile Coyotero Apache bands. The fort also endeavored to keep the White Mountain Apaches from participating in hostilities and to protect surrounding lands from encroachment by white settlers. The War Dept. closed the fort in 1922 and it was turned over to the Department of Interior for the Theodore Roosevelt Indian Boarding School. In 1976 it became a historic district.
