Composed 1934. Revised 1939. First performance by members of the brass section of the Greenwich Concert Orchestra of the Federal Music Project of New York City, WPA, New York, May 26, 1937 at the Federal Music Theatre, the composer conducting.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.

On exactly the day the 4th movement was finished Poland was invaded by the Nazis impelling the composer to erase the title of that movement and to abandon thought of giving it a title. Composed 1939. Won 5th place and a performance in nation-wide contest for American compositions insitiuted by the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, D.C., 1941. Composers in this contest were unknown to the judges until after the contest.--Cf. Fleisher Collection.

Arthur Cohn (1910-1998) was an American composer, and a critical and historical writer on music. He was also an important figure in music publishing, holding prominent posts at Mills, MCA, and Carl Fischer, and promoting the publication of new music. As an author, Cohn was known best for his writing on contemporary music. Two of his books, The Collector's Twentieth-Century Music in the Western Hemisphere (1961) and Twentieth-Century Music in Europe (1965), came to be regarded as standard texts. Cohn died in Manhattan in 1998.
