Biographical History
Established November 4, 1823, as an auxiliary to the American Colonization Society, to provide and organize resources for the free black population of Virginia who desired to emigrate. In December 1828 the members of the auxiliary resolved to become the Colonization Society of Virginia, separate from the parent society, for the purpose of providing funds for those who voluntarily chose to emigrate to Liberia.
