Biographical History

Rabbi Gavriel Schlesinger was the secretary of the Mizrachi in Hungary in the period leading up to and including the Holocaust. The Mizrachi movement was a religious Zionist movement founded in 1902 as a religious faction of the World Zionist Organization. Its first manifesto, written by Rabbi Ze'ev Jawitz, attempted to combine political and cultural ideals to further the Zionist cause. By 1903, it had 210 branches in Eastern Europe. Mizrachi of America was founded in 1911, and Mizrachi of Palestine in 1918. The organization continued to grow, adding the Mizrachi Palestine Fund in 1928 and the youth group B'nei Akiva in 1934. The organization is still involved in activities to boost the Zionist cause around the world, and it now has branches all across the United States.
