Physician, historian and bibliographer.
Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan, historian, was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1797. He emigrated to Quebec in 1823 and was admitted to medical school in 1827. In 1834 O'Callaghan became the editor of "The Vindicator." He was elected a member of the assembly of Lower Canada, but moved to Albany, New York, after the insurrection. After a long employment in the office of the secretary of state at Albany in editing the records of the state, he moved to New York City in 1870. He died in 1880.
Irish physician and historian who emigrated to Canada, where he became a member of Parliament, and later moved to New York.
Edmund Bailey O'Callaghan was born in County Cork, Ireland, in 1797. He emigrated to Quebec in 1823 and was where he completed his medical studies and in 1827 began practice in Montreal. About 1832, O'Callaghan became the editor of "The Vindicator." He was elected a member of the assembly of Lower Canada in 1834, but the insurrection of 1837 forced him to seek asylum in the United States. He settled in Albany, New York where he was given a position in the office of the secretary of state as a curator of records related to the colonial history of New York State. He compiled extensive published works containing transcriptions and translations of these records. He died in 1880.
