Biographical History
Robert G. Layer earned a Ph. D. in economics from Harvard University in 1952. As part of the research for his doctoral dissertation, Layer closely examined the financial and production records of several nineteenth century New England textile manufacturers held at Baker Library. Layer used this statistical data in his 1952 thesis "Wages, Earnings, and Output in Four Cotton Textile Companies in New England, 1825-1860" and later in a 1955 book "Earnings of cotton mill operatives, 1825-1914." (Cambridge, Mass., Committee on Research in Economic History; distributed by the Harvard University Press, 1955.).
