Biographical History

Anson George McCook of Steubenville, Ohio, was the son of John and Catherine Julia Sheldon McCook and a member of the Fighting McCooks, an Ohio family that sent fifteen men to serve in the Civil War. Before the Civil War, he studied law in the firm of his cousin George Wythe McCook and Edwin Stanton. Anson McCook served in the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry and 194th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, rising to the rank of brevet brigadier general. Following the war, he enjoyed a successful career in government, serving as assessor of internal revenue, United States senator from New York from 1877-1883, and secretary of the U.S. Senate during the 50th, 51st and 52nd sessions.
