Biographical History
Medora Field Perkerson (1892-1960), Georgia author and journalist, married Angus Perkerson.
Medora Field Perkerson (1892-1960), author, journalist, and editor, was born September 18, 1892, in Lindale, Georgia. She did some free-lance writing and wrote for the Rome, Georgia, HERALD-TRIBUNE before she became a staff member of the ATLANTA JOURNAL AND CONSTITUTION MAGAZINE (assistant editor 1920; columnist 1940-1960), writing as personal advice columnist "Marie Rose" in addition to numerous articles. In 1922 she married Angus Perkerson, a journalist and editor of the ATLANTA JOURNAL MAGAZINE. Perkerson was the author of two mysteries eventually made into motion pictures: WHO KILLED AUNT MAGGIE? (1939) and BLOOD ON HER SHOE (1942). She also wrote WHITE COLUMNS IN GEORGIA (1952), a non-fiction, historical work. She was president of the Georgia Chapter of the National League of American Pen Women and of the Atlanta Women's Press Club and served as president of the board of Atlanta Child Welfare Association. She was named an Atlanta Woman of the Year in 1952. Perkerson died June 6, 1960 in Atlanta, Georgia.
Medora Field Perkerson was born nearby on the site of the present Lindale Baptist Church. In her early twenties she became a member of the The Atlana Journal-Constitution Magazine staff, and later was married to Angus Perkerson, its editor. For may years, troubled people sought the sympathetic and sound counsel she gave in her weekly column as 'Marie Rose'. She was the friend of the friendless. Through offices held in her church, in the Child Service Association of Atlanta and in organizations of writers, she became an influence for good throughout Georgia and beyond its borders. Mrs. Perkerson's most notable book, White Columns in Georgia, tells the store of her state through its historic houses. Her two other books, Who Killed Aunt Maggie? and Blood on Her Shoe, have Georgia settings.
