Biographical History
James Francis Collins (1905-1989) was born in New York City. After his graduation from West Point in 1927, he commissioned in the field artillery. During World War II, he served with the I Corps. He made brigadier general in January 1945 and became commanding general of I Corps Artillery. In February 1946, he was reverted to the rank of colonel. He held the positions of commanding general of the U.S. Army Alaska, from 1954 to 1957, and deputy chief of staff for personnel for the U.S. Army, from 1958 to 1961. He was Commander in Chief of the U.S. Army Pacific from 1964 until his retirement at the rank of general in March 1964. His awards included the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, and Air Medal.
