Biographical History

RIT Student Government was formally recognized in 1951. According to the preamble of the Student Government charter, the purposes of Rochester Institute of Technology Student Government are: to represent the students through a centralized representative government; to facilitate communication and understanding between students, the studentgovernment, and the Institute; to solicit and receive student issues, concerns, and opinions; to ensure and expand student participation in Institute decisions affecting students; to safeguard the individual and collective rights and freedoms of students; and to coordinate and expand student involvement in all areas of campus life. Membership is available to all students enrolled in day courses, as well as graduate, special, or part-time students. Student Government has an executive and legislative branch. The legislative branch consists of the Student Senate, and the executive branch consists of the President, Vice President, and Executive Cabinet. Office holders in Student Government are both elected and appointed (the President appoints members to the Executive Cabinet). RIT Student Government works to represent the student body to the faculty and staff of RIT, administrators, and the board of trustees. Additionally, the organization holds several events throughout the year to increase student awareness and involvement.
