Biographical History

Charles Metzke was born at Heathcote, Vic. in 1869. He worked as a blacksmith and then as a farm labourer. He made several visits to Tasmania and worked as a shearer in NSW in the 1892-1894 seasons. He went to WA in 1895 to join two brothers on the gold fields at Lake Darlot, 250 miles north of Coolgardie. They spent eight years there, prospecting, casting goods, and running a store and hotel. He married in 1903 and lived in Subiaco, WA for a few years where he developed an interst in bowls. He and his wife returned to Victoria about 1907 and spent the rest of their lives in Surrey Hills.
