Biographical History
The University of Minnesota Press was established by the Board of Regents on July 16, 1925. The Regents' resolution created the Press to publish all books, bulletins, studies, syllabi, outlines, papers and other materials which were to be produced by the University of Minnesota and sold to the public and academic community. The Press was to be run by a director and a committee of five faculty members appointed annually by the president of the University.
The first book published by the Press was a biography of Cyrus Northrop written by Oscar W. Firkins (1925). The Press emphasized scholarly publications of books and pamphlets, but in the 1990s, the Press expanded their services and began to print children's and regional books. The University Press is currently an independent nonprofit printing service, with a small portion of their funding (approximately 5% of the budget) coming from the University of Minnesota.
