Biographical History

Wheeler P. Davey taught chemistry at Pennsylvania State College.

Wheeler Pedlar Davey was born on March 19, 1886 in Cleveland, Ohio. He was a 1906 graduate of Western Reserve University. After teaching chemistry and physics in the public schools of Cleveland, Ohio, Mr. Davey was named to the Penn State faculty in 1909 where he earned a master of science degree in 1911. He left Penn State in 1911 to accept a research fellowship at Cornell University and from 1914 to 1926 served as research physicist with General Electric Co. Wheeler P. Davey returned to Penn State in 1926 and was named professor of physical chemistry and industrial research. In 1926, Mr. Davey founded the Priestley Lecture Series at Penn State which annually presents an outstanding scientist who lectures on a subject that is border line between physical chemistry and another field. Davey retired in 1949 as research professor of physics and chemistry and died on October 12, 1959. Davey Laboratory was named for him in 1971.
