Siegel, Seymour

Professor of Theology and Ethics at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America.

Seymour Siegel was born September 12, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. He was educated at University of Chicago, received his M.H.L. in 1951 and D.H.L. in 1958 from Jewish Theological Seminary, New York City where he was a professor of Jewish Ethics and Theology. He was the author of hundreds of articles, editor of two books, lecturer, and was an authority on religious law. He served as Director of the United States Memorial Holocaust Commission, opened the door for the ordination of female rabbis, and articulated the Conservative view on abortion. Rabbi Siegel never married, he died February 24, 1988 in New York City.

The U.S.S. Aquarius (AKA-16) was first launched in July 1943 and reported to the Pacific Fleet at San Francisco in October 1943. She served as a transport to Guam in July 1944, carried the 1st Marine Division to Peleliu in September 1944, and carried Army units to the Leyte landings in October 1944 and the Zambales-Subic Bay operation in January 1945. Aquarius later received eight battle stars for her World War II service.

Dr. Seymour Siegel is the author of the book An orphan in New York City: life with a thousand brothers and sisters (2000), which recounts his childhood in the Hebrew Orphan Asylum in New York City.
