Biographical History
American etcher and painter.
George Elbert Burr was born in Munroe Falls, Ohio in 1859. In 1879, he began his art studies at the Chicago Art Academy in Chicago, Ill. and during the 1880s and 1890s worked as an illustrator for Harper's Magazine, Scribner's, Cosmopolitan and Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper. Because of failing health, in 1906, he moved with his family to Denver, Colo. where he established a studio and became the first President of the Denver Art Association. In 1920, the family moved to Phoenix, Ariz. where Burr was elected President of the Phoenix Art Association. Throughout the 1920s and 1930s, Burr's artwork was exhibited at the Library of Congress, Smithsonian Institute, Corcoran Gallery, Washington, D.C.; Brooklyn Museum, N.Y.; Victoria and Albert Museum, London, England; and at the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, France. He died in 1939.
