Biographical History
Lawyer, soldier, aide-de-camp to General Winfield Scott, territorial governor of the Oregon territory. Gaines was born in Augusta Co. Va. and moved with his family to Boone Co. Ky. shortly thereafter. He served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War. In 1850 President Taylor appointed him governor of the Oregon Territory. He died in Oregon in 1857.
John Pollard Gaines was born (September 22, 1795) in Augusta County, Virginia. He served as an aide to General Winfield Scott in the Mexican War and, later, as a member of the U.S. Congress from Kentucky (1847-1849). Appointed as governor of the Oregon Territory in 1850 by President Zachary Taylor, Gaines served (1850-1853) during the first series of Indian wars which broke out in the region. He died (December 9, 1857) in Salem.
