Biographical History

Erected 1788 by the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; the Synod divided into Old and New School synods in 1838, both calling themselves the Synod of Virginia; the New School synod withdrew to the United Synod of the South in 1858; the Old School synod withdrew to the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States of America in 1861; the New School synod rejoined the Old School synod in 1864; this reunited Synod of Virginia continued in the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. after 1865; in 1973 it merged into the Synod of the Virginias.

Synod erected, 1788 by the PCUSA; divided into Old and New School factions, 1838. The New School synod withdrew to the United Synod of the South in 1858. The Old School synod withdrew to the PCCSA in 1861. The Old School and New School synods reunited under the PCUS in 1865. The Synod merged into the Synod of the Virginias in 1973.

In 1973 it merged with the Synod of West Virginia to form the Synod of the Virginias.
