Biographical History

John Gough Nichols, born 22 May 1806, was the third of a line of literary printers (being eldest son of John Bowyer Nichols, 1779-1863, who was eldest son of John Nichols, 1745-1826): his second name was due to the circumstance that Richard Gough, the antiquary, was his godfather. He was one of the founders of the Camden Society, and joint editor of the Gentleman's Magazine 1828-51, and sole editor 1851-56, as well as author of many antiquarian books. He died 14 November 1873. Further details are given in the Dictionary of National Biography .
