Biographical History

Ballerina.

From the description of Anna Pavlova collection, 1909-[ongoing]. (Museum of Performance & Design). WorldCat record id: 430368594

Anna Pavlova was a Russian ballet dancer. Gabriel Astruc was a French producer, publisher, talent manager and founder of the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. Between 1907 and 1913 Astruc also handled a variety of theatrical business matters for Serge Diaghilev, including publicity, contract negotiations, financial backing, negotiations for tours and galas.

From the guide to the Anna Pavlova correspondence with Gabriel Astruc, 1909-1913., (Harvard Theatre Collection. Houghton Library, Harvard College Library, Harvard University)

Anna Pavlova was born in St Petersburg on January 31, 1881. She enrolled at the Imperial Ballet School at the age of ten. She debuted on September 19, 1899 at the Maryinsky Theatre and by 1906 she had become the Maryinsky's principal ballerina. In 1907, Ms. Pavlova made her first foreign tour and in 1908 she joined Ballets Russes. She first appeared at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1910. In 1912, she purchased Ivy House in Hampstead, England, where she established her own school of dance. Her last appearance in St. Petersburg was in 1913 and she never again returned home to Russia after Germany declared war in 1914. Her life was spent touring the world with her own company. Her last world tour was in 1928-1929 and her last performance in England was in 1930. Anna Pavlova died on January 23, 1931.
