British admiral, commander of the Mediterranean fleet; of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland Co., Eng.
Admiral who took command on Nelson's death.
Collingwood was born September 1748 at Newcastle-upon-Tyneand and joined the navy at age 11. By May 1804 he was promoted to vice-admiral; served as second-in-command to Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar; assumed command of the British fleet after Lord Nelson's death; awarded an annual pension of £2000 and the title Baron Collingwood following the British victory at Trafalgar; promoted to Vice-Admiral of the Red, Commander in Chief of the Mediterranean Fleet, Nov. 9, 1805; died at sea Mar. 7, 1810.
