Biographical History
The Indiana Extension Homemakers (IEHA) started in 1913 as Home Economics Clubs to aid rural homemakers with everyday tasks. In the early 1950s the name was changed to Home Demonstration Clubs. Finally in 1966, Extension Homemakers became the accepted name and has continued as such. The individual clubs were suppported by county groups and a statewide organization. In 1980, the IEHA began preparation for its 75th anniversary to be held in 1988. To celebrate this occasion the state club wanted to put together a group of oral histories from club members throughout the state of Indiana. This inspired a slide tape show that traveled around the state to the different clubs. It also produced six books using the oral histories provided by the women involved in the clubs. The Indiana project sparked a similar project for the national organization and both were headed by Eleanor Arnold.
