Biographical History

Charleston, South Carolina cotton broker and rice plantation owner. The son of Thomas Wright Bacot (1795-1851) and Harriett Susannah Wainwright, Robert Dewar Bacot was president of the Phoenix Fire Engine Company, a volunteer firefighting company, and captain of the Phoenix Rifles, a volunteer militia unit raised just before the outbreak of the Civil War. He married Julia Amanda Huger (b. 1825) in 1843, and their children were: Thomas Wright Bacot (1849-1927), Julius Motte Bacot (1859-1899), Daniel Huger Bacot (1847-1920), Harriet Wainwright Bacot (1844-1920), Julia Huger Bacot (b. 1867), Sarah Louisa Bacot (b. 1863), and Robert Dewar Wainwright Bacot (1854-1915).
