Biographical History
Gladys Irene Champney was born in Axtel, Ohio and attended public schools in Oberlin. She graduated from Oberlin College in 1918, with a double degree in English and art. She taught art in the Cleveland Public Schools from 1922 to 1958. During the 1920s and 1930s, she studied art with Henry Keller (1869-1949) and Frank Wilcox (1887-1964). After retiring from teaching in Cleveland, she worked as a full-time artist and writer. In 1972, she began to keep a journal and faithfully recorded her impressions of life until 1989. She was very concerned about wildlife and charitable causes, and volunteered her time and talents to the First United Methodist Church of Oberlin. Gladys Irene Champney died on 19 December 1991.
