Biographical note: Collitz (1855-1935) was a philologist who specialized in comparative German philology. He taught at the Bryn Mawr College (1886-1907) and the Johns Hopkins University (1907-27).

Collitz was trained at the University of Gottingen and later studied Indo-European linguistics at the University of Berlin from 1879-82. He became Librarian and taught at the University of Halle from 1883 until he left for the Bryn Mawr College in 1886.

Collitz accepted the newly established chair in Germanic Philology at the Johns Hopkins University. He married Klara Hechtenberg in 1904, and they had no children. He died in Baltimore on May 13, 1935.
