Biographical History
Theodore C. (Chaikin) Sorensen was born in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 8, 1928. He attended the University of Nebraska, where he received a B.S. degree in Law in 1949 and an LL.B. in 1951. Mr. Sorensen was admitted to the Nebraska bar in 1951, the New York bar in 1966, the District of Columbia bar in 1971, and to the U.S. Supreme Court. He served as attorney for the Federal Security Agency from 1951 to 1952 and was a member of the staff of the Joint Committee on Railroad Retirement in the U.S. Senate in 1952. Under Senator John F. Kennedy he was staff assistant and speechwriter from 1953 to 1961, and served as secretary of the New England Senators Conference from 1953 to 1959. He served as Special Counsel to President Kennedy and, briefly, to President Lyndon B. Johnson, from 1961-64. Mr. Sorensen was editor-at-large and a director of the Saturday Review from 1966 to 1969. He was a Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate from New York in the 1970 primary. He is currently a member of the law firm Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton, and Garrison of New York City. He is the author of three books on the Kennedy years: Decision Making in the White House (1963), Kennedy (1965), The Kennedy Legacy (1969) and Let the Word Go Forth : The Speeches, Statements and Writings of John F. Kennedy, 1947-1963 (1988).
