Biographical History
Howard Clinton Zahniser (b.1906) was an American environmental activist. He worked for the Biological Survey, later known as the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (1931-1943). Zahniser also served as Executive Secretary of the Wilderness Society and editor of its magazine: Living Wilderness (1945-1964). He was instrumental in drafting legislation which later became known as the Wilderness Act (1964). The Wilderness Act defined the legal definition for wilderness land, thereby setting up protection for approximately 9.1 million acres of federal land. Zahniser died in 1964.
