Clifford Evans Van Hook was born April 10, 1886, in Washington, D.C. He received his commission from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1911, and advanced to the rank of rear admiral in November 1941. He commanded the Seventh Fleet from November 1943 to November 1945. Van Hook died on November 28, 1975.
