ANCLAS is a broad based community organization formed in 1989 as a result of the increasing Latino population in Syracuse. It is a volunteer organization. Its purposes include: A- To improve and broaden the dialogue between the Latino community and the community at large; B- To educate the public on issues and concerns affecting the Latino community in Onondaga County; C- To effectively interface with departments, agencies and community services with the objective to promote policy change and enhance the quality of life of Latinos in Onondaga County; D- To elevate awareness of the untapped resources of skills and talents within the Latino community, thereby serving as a catalyst for the active participation of Latinos in all sectors of community activity and endeavor.
ANCLAS held its first "official" meeting in November 1989. A diverse group of 75 Latinos and non-Latinos attended. Attendees included representatives of city and county government, human service agencies and those providing direct service to the Latino community and the community at large.
