Méhul's Adrien, empereur de Rome, opera in 3 acts with a libretto by François Benoît Hoffman, after P. Metastasio, Adriano in Siria. Composed in 1790-1791, the première was planned for 1792 but forbidden by the Commune of Paris; Méhul reused some material with revisions for the eventual performance in Paris at the Opéra, 4 June 1799, which was banned after the second performance then revived there 4 Feb 1800 (with further revisions) and 26 Dec 1801.
