Biographical History

In 1809, Illinois became a territory of the United States and, as such, had its governors appointed by the President of the United States. The territorial governor was Ninian Edwards who was succeeded by Shadrach Bond when Illinois became a state in 1818. When the Governor was out of the territory, the territorial Secretary served as acting Governor, and maintained the gubernatorial correspondence.
