Biographical History
Lucy I. Davis, born in Aurelius, Michigan, June 11, 1882, was the Registrar of the University of Oregon Medical School for 25 years. She came to Portland with her parents in 1891 and graduated from the Portland High School. Ms. Davis married Shannon Phillips on August 20, 1937.
Lucy Davis began her service at UOMS in 1918 at the 23rd Avenue and Lovejoy Street location before the institution was based on Marquam Hill. She continued her duties until shortly before her death on October 8, 1943.
Ms. Phillips kept the records of all students of the school and evaluated and summarized the transcripts of thousands of applicants for admission, which was considered to greatly facilitate the work of the Committee on Admissions.
It was said that she had a gracious personality, unfailing courtesy, and a deep sense of responsibility and was efficient in her work. These attributes made her an important asset to faculty and students alike.
She was active in the Business and Professional Women’s Club of Portland and served as president of the club in 1938. She was also a member of the Association of Registrars. While registrar, Lucy compiled the record of the activities of women graduates of the school, which comprises this collection.
