Biographical History
Ralph Edward Bailey (1888-1960) was born in Brunswick, GA. He attended Stone Mountain Preparatory School, Mercer University, and was awarded a Th.M. from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1911. In that same year he married Julia Baynard Pickard, who was the daughter of Dr. W.L. Pickard, the President of Mercer University. Bailey was ordained a Baptist minister in 1907 and served Baptist churches in Harrodsburg, Kentucky; Jefferson City, Missouri; and Cleveland, Ohio from 1911 until 1919. In 1921 he shifted his denominational allegiance and ministerial labors to the Unitarian faith. Bailey served pastorates at Unitarian churches in Charleston, South Carolina; Omaha, Nebraska; Cambridge, Massachusetts; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. While in Omaha, Bailey was the president of both the Omaha Professional Men's Club and the Omaha Community Playhouse. During his life he wrote a biography of Alexander Hamilton, entitled An American Colossus, and several books of poetry, such as The Art of Following the Nazarine .
