Biographical History

Gray was one of the first settlers of Quindaro in Wyandotte County. A native of Evans, New York, he came to Kansas in March of 1857. He farmed in the Quindaro area from 1858-1873 and held the post of director for the State Agricultural Society from 1866-1870. In 1872 he was elected first secretary of the State Board of Agriculture where he earned a reputation for his published reports which he had originated, and the success of the display Kansas made at the Centennial Exhibition at Philadelphia in 1876. He held various positions in the Free State Party and was elected to the first state legislature in December of 1859.
