Gilbert C. (Gil) Barrera was a freelance photographer who was employed by the University of Texas at San Antonio to photograph its building and organization from 1972 to 1978.
Gilbert C. (Gil) Barrera was a freelance photographer who was employed by the University of Texas at San Antonio to photograph its building and organization from 1972 to 1978. The son of Steve and Rose Barrera, he was born in San Antonio, Texas, on January 22, 1932. He had two brothers: Steve Barrera, Jr., and Roy Barrera, Sr. He was raised in San Antonio, attending Fox Tech High School, where he met his wife Norma. In high school, he created the cartoon series Dizzy Hites and The Friedenhoffenhousens .
His professional work included working as a photojournalist for the San Antonio Light newspaper, then as a freelance photographer for Southwestern Bell, the University of Texas at San Antonio, and Southwest Research. He also contributed work to Life magazine, Southern Living, Saturday Evening Post, La Prensa, and several others.
