Biographical History

The City Parks Association was originally chartered on May 23, 1889, by the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia to create and maintain open spaces as park areas for citizens of Philadelphia. The Association worked together with city govenment in recommending large and small parks for the city.

Through the efforts of the Association, League Island Park was established in 1895 and Tacony Creek Park and Pennypack Park became part of the municipal park system in 1915. The Association advocated beautifying the banks of the Schuylkill River and encouraged the city government to pass a zoning law. The Association also worked actively to eradicate the unsightly billboard nuisance in the city.
