Biographical History
David Jacks, born in Scotland in 1822, came to the United States in 1841. He arrived in San Francisco, California in April 1849 and became a U.S. citizen that December. In 1851 he moved to Monterey, California and began a lifelong career in property acquisition and management. Jacks was involved in the development and growth of Monterey County and was active in the field of education.
David Jacks, pioneer businessman in Monterey, CA, sailed around the Horn to California in 1848. In 1850 he settled in Monterey, where he acquired extensive land holdings and became a farmer and stock raiser. Jacks was involved in much litigation concerning his properties, including a suit by the city of Monterey in 1877 to regain land held by Jacks. He was instrumental in the construction of the Monterey and Salinas Valley Railroad in 1874, in establishing the Pacific Grove Retreat, and in founding the city of Del Monte.
