Biographical History
John Reed Hodge (1893-1963) was born in Golconda, Illinois. He attended Southern Illinois Teachers College and the University of Illinois. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant out of OCS into the Infantry Reserve in 1917. He saw service in World War I in France and Luxembourg during 1918 and 1919. He was promoted to Captain in July of 1920. From 1921 to 1925, he was a Military Science professor on the faculty of the Mississippi Agricultural and Mechanical College. He graduated from the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, in 1926, and then saw overseas service in the Pacific, primarily in Hawaii until 1929. He was promoted to Major in 1935 and then to Lt. Colonel in 1940. In June 1942, he was given a temporary promotion to brigadier general, and served as the Assistant Division Commander, 25th Infantry Division, Guadalcanal. From 1948 to 1950, he served as Commanding General of the V Corps, Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and later served concurrently as the Commanding General, Third U.S. Army, and Commanding General, Fort McPherson, Georgia, from September 1950 to May 1952. From 1952 to 1953 he served as the Chief of Army Field Forces, until his retirement from Army service in June 1953.
