Biographical History

The architectural firm of Balcomb & Rice, Architects operated in Denver, Colo. from 1886-1897. The firm was known for its designs of residential and commercial structures. Architect, Robert G. Balcomb was born in Canada in March 1846 and immigrated to the United States in 1867. He lived in Calif. and Arizona before moving to Colo. in 1885. After the dissolution of his partnership with Eugene Rice, Balcomb later moved to Albuquerque, N.M. The second partner, Eugene Remich Rice (1867-1904) studied architecture at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. before moving to Denver in 1861. After his break with Balcomb, Rice continued working as an architect in Denver until his death. Hugh McKay commissioned the house in the 1890s. McKay immigrated from Scotland to America in 1884 and lived in the house into the 1920s.
