Henry George Keene (1781-1864), Persian scholar, was born in London on 30 September 1781. After a private education, he joined the Madras army as a cadet, taking part in the siege and storming of Seringapatam in 1799. He entered the Madras civil service in 1801, and attended Fort William College, Calcutta, 1801-1804. In 1809 he resigned from the service and returned to England. Keene entered Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, in 1811, where he became a Fellow in 1817. He was ordained deacon in 1818, and priest in 1819, and was Professor of Arabic and Persian at the East India College, Haileybury, 1824-1834. He died at Tunbridge Wells on 29 January 1864.
