Biographical History
William P. Welsh, born in 1889, grew up in Lexington and studied art in Paris, France, and New York City. He served with the United States Army in border disputes between Mexico and the United States, and in France during World War I. As an illustrator in New York and Chicago for more than twenty years, he produced covers for the Woman's Home Companion and for Hearst International publications, advertisements for the Pullman Company, and illustrations of Abraham Lincoln for the Lincoln National Life Insurance Company. After serving in the Philippines and Japan during World War II, he returned to Lexington, where he painted portraits and taught art.
