Biographical History
The Louisiana State University Faculty Senate was established during the academic year 1973-1974, and was charged with representing the interests of the faculty within the larger LSU community. Currently, senators are elected from the larger body of the Faculty Council (all full time members of the LSU academic staff having the rank of instructor or higher) and are delegated their authority and responsibility to act on behalf of the Council. Each college or school within the university is awarded one senate seat for every twenty-five full time faculty members in its college.
The Executive Committee consists of three officers, three at-large members, and one ex-officio member, all elected from within the ranks of the Faculty Senate. The Executive Committee represents the Senate (and by extension, the Council) at LSU's administrative level, and works to implement policy and enforce Senate decisions. The Faculty Senate has a number of standing committees (the exact number has varied through the years), while special committees are formed as needed for specific tasks that fall outside the scope of the standing committees.
