Biographical History

Jeremiah Smith Jr. was a pioneer settler, politician, and businessman in Burlington, Iowa. He received the title of major in the Black Hawk War, established a general store in Burlington in 1833, and traded with settlers and Sac and Fox Indians. Smith built a capitol for the First Wisconsin Territorial Legislature in Burlington at his own expense, but it burned in December 1837. He suffered futher loss when someone fraudulently collected payment from the U.S. government for debts owed to Smith by Sac and Fox tribal members.
