Biographical History

William Cockburn, d. 1804 was a Scottish-born surveyor and deputy to Alexander Colden of New York, NY. In 1767 Cockburn owned 30,000 acres of land, which he claimed payment on when Vermont finally settled its land disputes with New York. In 1771 he surveyed Socialborough (near Rutland and Pittsford) and in 1772 he surveyed Onion River.
