Biographical History

Grand Forks, N.D. native, journalist, commercial artist, and premier sports enthusiast.

William Julison was born August 30, 1916 in Grand Forks, N.D. to Germans-from-Russia, Gustav and Marie Anne (Scherer) Julissen. The family name evolved from Yulissen in Russia, to Julissen after they emigrated, to Julison after WWII. Julison was educated in Grand Forks (Central High School, 1934; University of North Dakota, 1937-1939). He enrolled in the Civilian Conservation Corps (1939-1941) and moonlighted as columnist and cartoonist for the camp newspaper. He was inducted into the army (1941), was a cartoonist/illustrator for several post newspapers, and served as a German interpreter (1945-1946). After the war, he worked for the Grand Forks Herald (1946-1956), and then ran his own commercial art service, the Art Mart, until his death July 1, 1988.

William Julison and his brothers, Steve and Adam, were active in hockey and softball in Grand Forks, N.D. for over forty years, both as team members on local and state championship teams in the 1930's and 1940's and as team sponsors in the 1960's. Teams discussed in the collection are: the Commercial League, the Adam's Place team in the City League, Art Mart softball team, the Dragons and Junior Dragons, Grand Forks Central, the Cavaliers, and the Flyers. William was manager of the Grand Forks American Legion Post 6 Amerks team in the States Dominion Hockey League, 1947-1950.
