Biographical History

Sea captain; native of Wiscasset, Maine; the Tucker family operated a shipping business transporting cotton and other products along ports of the East Coast of the U.S.; the family firm was founded by Joseph's father, Richard Hawley Tucker, who began the business in 1827; Joseph Tucker (1821-1889) and Richard Holbrook Tucker (1816-1895), both served as captains, Joseph from 1843 to 1859 and Richard from 1838 to 1848. After his tenure as captain, Richard looked after the family's interests in Charleston, S.C., (1848-54), then returned to Wiscasset where he engaged in various businesses.
